Plastic Shopping Bags
Well a number of Supermarkets are now offering an alternative to plastic carrier bags and at least superficially it seems like a good idea, but there’s such a long way to go, and to be honest, alternatives just aren’t always available or so easy to use. Plus the fact that although they may be offering an alternative carrier bag, most of their products are packaged in plastic or if loose like vegetables they supply you with - guess what - that’s right a plastic bag to pack them in!
And what about all the other plastics we throw away every day?
My alternative suggestions, in no particular order: -
Paper bags (but they need to be strong and have carry handles)
Take your own hessian / cotton bags
Buy and use the stronger re-useable plastic bags from the store (they don’t last forever though and then end up in land fill sites just the same)
Fold down plastic boxes (can be good, but also can be too heavy)
Cardboard boxes from the store (same problem as plastc boxes - may be too heavy, and stores don’t always have them available)
Why don’t they produce biodegradable plastic bags for us to use? Maybe that would be a partial answer?
