SoapWhy is it that people think beauty products are better the more expensive they are? The trend is for the more expensive products to be hyped up by the media, as advertisers tell us what to think, what to use and how to behave. Its all nonsense

You can make your own beauty products at home for very little money.

Sometimes mass made beauty products can claim that they are organic or ‘natural’ on the bottles but they may not be being totally truthful. The actual natural ingredients can make up only a small part of the cream, oil, or shampoo. The fillers and other preservatives in the products could still be irritating to the skin.

In great-grandmother’s day, cosmetics and medicines had all natural origins. Today, cosmetics and shampoos are created from formulas in chemistry labs and often contain artificial ingredients. This means that your skin could react badly and flare up.

Home made and natural beauty recipes use vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Try to stick with organic ingredients that have not been treated with weed killers or insect sprays if possible, because these chemicals could make their way into your body via your creams and potions.

Some natural ingredients for beauty products

1. Lemons – A natural astringent, lemon juice pulls impurities out of the skin leaving it smooth and beautiful. Lemons can lighten dark spots on the skin. Half a lemon is all you need to rub away many skin problems. Mix a bit of reduced lemon juice with water for a naturally lemon scented hair spray. Lemon is also popular to use diluted with water for a blonde hair lightener.

2. Roses – Fragrant and soothing. Rose petals transfer their fragrance to your body if you add fresh petals to your bath water. You can create your own all natural rose water by steeping roses and then adding a little coconut milk to the mixture. (Keep in the fridge)

3. Strawberries – Combined with coarse sea salt and olive oil, strawberries and their seeds make a perfect natural exfoliate for the body.

4. Bananas – Contain potassium. You can restore the moisture balance in your skin with a face mask made from banana. Mix your creamed bananas with egg white and / or yogurt to create the mask.

5. Honey – Contains antibacterial properties. You get the benefits of the antibacterial properties using a honey facial mask. For dry skin, mix honey with soaked oatmeal. Oily skin requires an astringent like apple vinegar in combination with the honey. Splash your face with warm water to open pores and then apply the mask.

Natural beauty treatments are cost effective and fun to make and use. What’s more, when you use natural products you avoid exposing your skin to the irritating chemicals in many commercial beauty products.
